About Fairfield, California

Founded in 1856 by clipper ship captain Robert H. Waterman, Fairfield was named after his hometown in Connecticut. This historic city is home to Travis Air Force Base and the famous Jelly Belly headquarters. According to the 2020 census, Fairfield’s population stands at 119,881.
A Rich History
The area that is now Fairfield was originally inhabited by Native Americans. In 1856, Captain Robert H. Waterman, inspired by his former home in Fairfield, Connecticut, established the town. Two years later, Fairfield became the county seat of Solano County, a title it won from Benicia. Captain Waterman contributed 16 acres of land for county buildings, helping Fairfield grow. The city was officially incorporated in 1903.
Geography and Climate
Fairfield covers a total area of 37.6 square miles, with 34.4 square miles of land and 3.2 square miles of water. Positioned within the California Coastal Ranges, Fairfield lies just north of Suisun Bay and northeast of San Pablo Bay. The Suisun Marsh, the largest saltwater marsh on the west coast of the United States, is a prominent feature of the region.
The city enjoys a hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csa), characterized by hot, dry summers with cool nights and mild, rainy winters.
