True or False: Do Hot Tubs Waste Water?

Hot Spring Hot Spot 2015 Tempo Lifestyle Pearl Espresso 1 1

Do hot tubs waste water? Actually, no! In fact, owning a hot tub is a smart water choice, especially when it comes to incorporating wellness into your daily life. If you find yourself confused about how a hot tub doesn’t waste water, allow us to explain.

Save Water, Own a Hot Tub

In your household, you most likely use a good bit of water everyday just by doing your normal routines. Showers, dishes, laundry, cooking – by bedtime the average household has used 80 – 100 gallons of water, per person.

A hot tub on the other hand holds water for months at a time and is designed to conserve water. As you use the spa, water is circulated through the filtration system. This allows you to use the same water, as long as it’s balanced correctly, over and over. Most hot tubs only need to be drained and refilled 3 to 4 times a year. And, if you’re using a saltwater hot tub, you can prolong those drain and refills for up to a year.

Worth Their Weight in Water

For those who’ve experienced the miraculous health benefits that come with soaking in a hot tub, there’s no doubt it’s unmatched. The alternative would be to soak in a bathtub, which uses a good amount of water and simply can’t provide the healing-feeling of a high-quality jet system, ergonomic seating, and therapeutically hot water.

Relax, Recycle, Reuse

Let’s talk about ways that you can recycle the hot tub’s water when it is time to drain it so you can conserve the most amount of water.

  • Wash your car – You can use a sump pump and repurpose your spa water to wash your car, sidewalk, or driveway.
  • Use it to flush your toilet – The average toilet uses 3 – 5 gallons per flush. You can add your hot tub water to the tank of your toilet and potentially save hundreds of gallons.

Handy Tips for Watering a Garden or Lawn with Hot Tub Water

  • Water certain plants – Not all plants in your garden can handle hot tub water. It is not advisable to water edible plants.
  • Research how much a specific plant can safely use.
  • If you don’t add water care products for a couple days prior to draining, the water should be safe for select plants when the sanitizer levels are low.
  • You can use water from a saltwater hot tub to water some shrubs and ground cover plants. The amount of salt in the water is relatively small, but some plants are more sensitive to salt than others.
