What Does Winter Hot Tub Maintenance Look Like?
What does winter hot tub maintenance look like? Is it different from other seasons? Are the chemicals I use the same all year round? What if the temperature suddenly drops? Will that affect my hot tub?
If you’re a new hot tub owner, you may be wondering about the answer to these questions and more. Before you stress about what your spa may or may not need during the days when the weather is cooler and the days are shorter, let’s explore what your hot tub needs to stay clean and balanced all winter long.
What Should My Winter Hot Tub Maintenance Routine Look Like?
Your winter hot tub maintenance routine will look similar to your summer and fall routines. You should always aim to test the pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, and sanitizer levels at least once a week. The system you have will determine the recommended levels for proper water balancing. If you have any questions about your water care system, our spa professionals are available to help.
How to Prep a Hot Tub for a Sudden Freeze
While average winter temperatures in Northern California tend to be above freezing, there may be a few days here and there where the temperatures drop and you’ll want to prepare your hot tub.
Never drain your spa when it is going to be at or below freezing. Instead keep it covered and the water circulating. If you expect that the freeze will last several days, you could also use a ceramic heater aimed at the equipment bay to prevent the most important components from freezing.
What If I Go on Vacation in the Winter?
If you look forward to a winter vacation every year, you certainly don’t have to skip it because you have a hot tub. Before you hit the road, check your water and balance as needed, making sure to clean or replace the filter. Add some shock and allow the spa to circulate uncovered for at least 10 minutes the day before your departure. Secure the cover tightly and enjoy your well-deserved time away.
How to Perform Seasonal Maintenance on a Hot Tub
Every three to four months, you’ll want to perform what’s called “seasonal maintenance” on your hot tub. This is a bit more involved than your weekly routine. This can be done anytime, though most spa owners choose the changing of the seasons, like right before or after winter.
Seasonal maintenance includes draining and cleaning the spa, checking for any loose parts or broken components, replacing filters or deep cleaning filters, if needed, and inspecting the cover for any damage.
