6 Tips for Maintaining and Extending the Life of Your Hot Tub

The ability to slip into a hot, soothing spa for a jet-powered massage at the end of a long day is nothing short of priceless. The good news is you can invest in a hot tub and reap those priceless benefits year after year. One of the best things about having a hot tub at home is that the more you use it, the better the experience becomes. We’ve put together a helpful list of tips for maintaining and extending the life of your hot tub so you can continue to maximize the wellness benefits and minimize the wear and tear on your spa.

1. Cleaning the Filter

One of the most important things you can do to maintain your hot tub is to clean the filter regularly — at least once a week. The filter is responsible for removing debris and contaminants from the water, so if it becomes clogged or dirty, it won’t work properly. Plus, a clogged filter is taxing on your spa’s pump. To clean the filter, simply remove it from the hot tub and rinse it with a garden hose weekly. Then, once a month spray or soak with a filter cleaning product. You should also replace the filter about every 12 months.

2. Maintaining the Water Balance

Another crucial aspect of hot tub maintenance is keeping the water balanced. This means ensuring that the pH, alkalinity, and sanitizer levels are all within the recommended ranges. You can use test strips or a water testing kit to check these levels regularly and adjust them as needed. Saltwater hot tubs make this step even easier, as saltwater spas use fewer water care products than their counterparts.

3. Draining and Refilling

If your hot tub uses a traditional chlorine system, you’ll need to drain and refill about every three to four months, depending on usage. This is the perfect time to clean and inspect your shell, cabinet, jets, and cover. On the other hand, if you’re using a saltwater hot tub, you can usually hold off on draining and refilling until around the 12-month mark, again depending on usage and maintenance.

4. Maintaining Your Hot Tub with a Cover

Using a cover is essential for maintaining and extending the life of your hot tub. It protects your hot tub from the elements and reduces the amount of debris that can get into the water. Make sure the cover fits properly and is in good condition. Covers will eventually need to be replaced, so be sure you’re inspecting the cover for wear and tear or damage that may compromise its ability to protect your spa.

5. Checking for Leaks

Regularly inspect the hot tub for leaks. Look for any signs of water pooling around the base of the hot tub or any dampness or discoloration around the pipes and fittings. If you do notice a leak, address it immediately to prevent further damage to the hot tub and to avoid wasting water.

6. Performing Regular Maintenance

In addition to the above tips, it’s important to perform regular maintenance on your spa. This includes things like cleaning the hot tub shell, wiping down the cover, and inspecting the jets and other components for any signs of wear or damage. Regular maintenance will help ensure that your hot tub stays in good condition and continues to bring you a wealth of wellness.
